Tuckpointing 101

What is tuckpointing?

In short, tuckpointing refers to the process of repairing the mortar between stone or brick. This is accomplished by grinding out the old mortar and replacing it with new, adding to the structural integrity of the chimney.

When is tuckpointing necessary?

Any time the mortar joints begin to deterioriate, tuckpointing is an option. Unfortunately, the mortar between brick and stone has a much shorter lifespan than those materials, and will begin to show signs of wear far sooner. If you are unsure, take a key or a dull knife and scrape one of the mortar joints. If a powdery material arises, your mortar needs attention. (Masonry that is in good condition will not be susceptible to scratches.) Tuckpointing can repair the masonry before further damage erodes the chimney, resulting in a costly repair or full replacement. If you are unsure, contact us for a free estimate.

Questions about tuckpointing? Not sure if it is right for you?

Why should I tuckpoint my chimney?

Brick, stone and mortar that is in a weakened condition can allow moisture to seep in, causing further damage to the masonry as well as the wall behind it. Tuckpointing will halt the damaging corrosion and add structural integrity and strength to your chimney while adding beauty and value to your home. It will also extend the life of your chimney and costs far less than a total rebuild.
